Workshop 1a and 2a

  • Topic:           Strategic Decision Making
  • Facilitator:    Michael Parent, Professor, Segal Graduate School, Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University
  • Description:  Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills enable us to respond quickly and effectively to business challenges and strategic planning issues.  Yet research shows us that most people are bad at making decisions, particularly as decision complexity rises.  This seminar will challenge traditional and often ineffective forms of decision making and introduce best practices.  This seminar is for those who are responsible for making significant and complex decisions in their organization, especially in the areas of strategy, finance, and managing others.  This session will cover:
  • The Realities of Decisions – Rational Decision Making and the Real World
  • Why We Struggle and What to Do – Common Cognitive Errors and Biases
  • When Decisions Get Complex – Tools for Multi-Goal Decision Making
  • Making Better Decisions – Decision Making Best Practices

    • Topic:           Communication & Negotiation Skills
    • Facilitator:    Sue Wazny, Principal & Consultant, The Neutral Zone


    Workshop 1c and 2c

    • Topic:           Ethical Principles and the Accounting Profession-CPABC Code Decoded
    • Facilitator:    Roger Merkosky, CPA, CA
    • Description:  This course will address ethics in the environment of all professional accountants, to help you challenge yourself and your colleagues in making decisions on business ethics by going through scenarios and case studies from the public practice, industry, government and/or not-for-profit sectors. You will also explore the results of recent ethics surveys that are applicable to all business settings. 

    Please bring a current copy of the CPA Code of Professional Conduct, as you will be referring to it throughout the session.

      • Description:  This session will walk through the trends in health care both locally and internationally including the impact of demographic changes, technology, consumer needs, and many more.
